I Love Boden

I love this season's Boden collection. Tres chic! It won't surprise you to know I have a long wish list, infact I have folded down almost every page of my catalogue. At the top of my list, is the long sleeve Breton top, the French blue and cream stripe reminds me of an agnes b. top I loved, and lived in, many years ago. I also adore the scallop trim shirt, complete with Peter Pan collar, sooo pretty. The classic pieces work well with vintage, after all, head to toe vintage just looks like fancy dress!

I have always been a Boden groupie, especially with a Boden textile designer as a sister. Each season I bore her with my 'wish list' and she usually tells me she has it all - jealous! Anyway, here are a few of my favourites, oh and for more, please visit Boden and the lovely Boden blog.

I think the Valentine fairy visited me last night, or the Milk Tray man, because I woke to Love Heart sweets on my bedroom floor. Then on my way to work I discovered more - in my gloves, hat and bag. And now, after some tea and cake, my teeth hurt!

I hate snow. There I said it. My heart breaks if I see anyone elderly struggling on the icy snow with their shopping. Sad face.

On Friday I woke up to snow, so before work I took a couple of iPhone snaps, fingers crossed these are the only ones I get to take this year.

Chintz Wallpaper and Other Things

On Friday evening Zoe visited - armed with goodies including, chocolate from Hotel Chocolate, Blythe dolls and her recent (and many) Blythe clothing purchases. Believe me when I say there were many, and apparently I am to blame!

After an early Saturday run I found myself on the open road with Clare, the antique shops of The Cotswolds were calling, and who were we to decline? We had a browse and a lovely lunch (at the recently refurbished Station Mill Antiques Centre, Chipping Norton - I can thoroughly recommend the Brie, apple and date sandwich) and before we knew it, we had filled the car with antiques. Ooooops! I was good, coming away with just a vintage glass dome and sewing pattern. Clare however, was bad. But in a good way. If you know what I mean.

On Sunday I decided to indulge in some wallpaper hanging. Think Frank Spencer meets Cath Kidston Chintz. It went really well until the moment I had to paper around the light socket (I will not share the bad language), let's just say things went wrong. Anyway, I have bought a further roll of wallpaper, ever the perfectionist. So guess what I will be doing on Saturday?

Pink Roses and 50's Tables

So far - touch wood - this has been a really rather good January. I have been busy every weekend, and made sure I spent all my free time with friends, and doing the things I love. Life is too short to do otherwise right?

My folks visited on Friday, bringing with them the 1950's table I discovered in a Leominster antique shop over Christmas, and a beautiful bunch of pink roses. Mum, Dad, Adrian and I had a great Tapas dinner and returned to the apartment to listen to Neil Young, drink tea and eat leftover Christmas chocolates. The 50's table looked absolutely perfect in its new home, and so did the pink roses.

On Sunday morning I ran with Al, who texted at 8.45am to say 'was I ready?' - I was still in bed! But after a dash for my running kit a sleepy Natasha dragged her lazy body around the streets of Oxford and South Park. We ran 8.5km.

Later, after a quick trip out for kitsch plastic roses (to fill my new Sylvac vase), my friends Tom and Emma visited for afternoon tea. Tea involved lots of Instagram talk - mine and Emma's current guilty pleasure / obsession. Emma's is filled with photographs of her Boston Terriers, taken on her new iPad and mine is filled with my daily life, taken on my new iPhone 4s. Happy days.

We made it to the end of the week! Does anyone else think January feels like putting on a wet swimming costume? I do, and to somehow relieve the trauma, I treated myself to a new mattress, sheets, duvet, duvet cover, pillows and pillow cases. Heavenly! My bedroom is now like a luxury suite at The Dorchester, I may have to go into hibernation until February. I have many plans for the weekend, and tonight I am being taken out to dinner, so I better get ready.

My Post Christmas Post

Here it is, my Christmas post - at last, I hear you cry. Highlights this year included, drinks parties in my new home, spending time with my family, running 'cross country' with my sister on Christmas Day (trust me, it was exhilarating), watching my five month old niece play with the Fisher Price activity set I bought her (bless), making a vintage wall hanging for my new home (with the help of my extremely talented Mum and sister) and spending a cosy pre-Christmas Day with my man - locked away with a stack of old films, treats and gifts. I plan to have many more days like these.

My Mum seems to have a sewing machine collection, she said I could have this one!

My sister is a textile designer and has many wonderful fabrics, which came in very handy for my wall hanging.

Goodbye 2011, Hello 2012

On New Year's Eve I walked along an eerily quiet Cowley Road, I felt quite alert, and for some reason I thought I was going to see a UFO - I have never seen a UFO, or a ghost for that matter, but I had a feeling something was about to happen. Then, out of nowhere, the most beautiful fox appeared. He paused, I paused, about two meters between us, as we both waited for someone to make the next move. And as I moved, he darted away, looking back to ensure I was not pursuing.

Home sweet home

So here we are again, New Year's Day, a time to reflect, and to start a new. I am not about to jump for joy over the end of a tough year. I like to think things happen for a reason, and when things feel hopeless, they usually, one way or another, come together. I guess life is far from perfect, but who would want it to be? The one lesson I will take with me from 2011, is to be kind to yourself. After all, life can be unkind enough. I believe 2012 will be a better year. It has to be.

I do not have any New Year's resolutions, but I have set myself a very modest photography project, where I hope to take a photograph a week, of my new home. I will try to post the photographs here each month.

It is raining out, so I will spend the remainder of the day reading your blog posts, pottering around my home (I am a professional time waster) and enjoying the smell of my roast dinner cooking.

I wish you all a very Happy New Year and I will leave you with a few snaps from 2011.

Christmas in my New Home

Today is the first day of my Christmas holiday and I am off until 3rd January - lovely! I thought I would enjoy a nice long lie in bed this morning, but I was so excited about being off work I bounced out of bed at 7am. I wonder why this does not happen on a work day? This is the first time I have been off work since I moved, and I can't wait to lock myself away with a box of chocolate covered brazil nuts and lashings of mulled wine. Om nom nom.

I have had two mini drinks parties this week, and I have a few people coming over for mince pies tonight. It is a wonderful home to entertain in, and my friends have found all my eccentric and eclectic mix of objects most amusing. My fabulous colleagues (Kate, Lucy and Alex) came over last night, following a whole afternoon at The Randolph drinking tea and eating scones with jam, lemon curd and clotted cream - heaven. Lucy completed on her first home today (yay!) and has already asked me to provide some interior design advice.

The reason for this post is I wanted to finally share a few photographs of my new home with you, especially because I have some kitsch Christmas items on display. I never have a Christmas tree because as a child I always found it sad when it was taken down. Silly I know, but each to their own.

I have painted the entire apartment brilliant white and had rustic oak flooring laid in the kitchen and living room. The previous owners laid oak in the hallway - which was one of the many reasons I fell in love with the place. I am having coir / seagrass laid in the bedrooms after Christmas, then the floors will be complete. I guess the style is modern retro, or maybe modern Granny chic! I gave roughly half of my vintage collections to charity when I moved, I wanted a fresh start, and I hoped someone else would enjoy them as much as I did. I currently prefer a less is more approach - most unlike me! I will be blogging some more photographs of my home very soon - I ran out of light so quickly today - roll on summer.

Christmas is Coming...

I have been rather uninspired by what I have seen in the shops this Christmas. Same old, same old. The retailers are reporting poor sales, but they are not giving me anything I am willing to part with my pennies for.

The only two things making my heart sing this Christmas are Dottie Angel's 12 Days of Joyfulness, as Tif rather beautifully crafts her way to Christmas. The many wonderful, and affordable, joyful Christmas craft ideas are an inspiration. If only I had more time! The other is the cute Cath Kidston Christmas designs, incorporating an adorable little bluebird. I will certainly be investing in the tea towel, and I also have an item wrapped up for my Mum.

I also love the Cath Kidston kitsch deer Christmas decoration - a must for all vintage deer collectors.

My sister and I ran a 10k race on Sunday, and my lovely niece came to cheer us on - sporting a super cute outfit. It reminded me of an old photograph of yours truly taken in 1975. Fake white fur is clearly a classic!

Anyway, thank you Laura for pacing me.

At 9k Laura said 'now you can use everything you have left' - I had nothing - I had used it all overtaking an Eynsham Road Runner at 6k. I am (rather shockingly) looking forward to many more races, and lots more unnecessary pain, in 2012.

Friday at Portobello Market

I haven't been to Portobello Market for years, and to be honest I avoid it - overpriced and too many tourists. Anyway, while passing through Notting Hill, I thought it's Friday (the quiet day) and it's December (few tourists). So I braved it.

The market was lovely, and quiet, and full to the brim of beautiful things. But so very very cold.

I saw numerous antiques I wanted to take back to Oxford, but carrying a French chair or kitsch child's horse around London would not have been a good look. Instead I browsed, took photographs and drank hot chocolate, with cream and marshmallows, as I watched the world (and his antiques) go by.

This month I have been mostly obsessing about skulls, stag antlers and taxidermy domes. Yes, it's official I'm an Osbourne. And ever since my friend Alex introduced me to the fabulous gothic jewellery of Pamela Love, I have been hunting for the perfect silver bird skull necklace.

Anyway, I found some stunning stag antlers at the Oxford flea market last week, but I spent too long 'thinking about them' and they sold. Don't you just hate it when that happens? But joyfully, my rather modest taxidermy dome / bell jar collection increased by one on Friday (below right). And would you Adam and Eve it, there is even a Bell Jar group on Flickr. Who knew?! There are clearly a few of us about.

An Autumn Saturday

Autumnal colours, vintage tweed and hot chocolate, that is what good Autumns are made of. And if there is a vintage tweed coat purchase thrown in (no comment), then even better. So on Saturday, Adrian and I drifted through the golden leaf filled woods to the Cowley Road, for some vintage shopping and hot chocolate. Just what the doctor ordered.

I am currently a huge fan of Very Vintage in The Ballroom. It is, as I have found out, impossible to leave empty handed, and Saturday was no exception. I am a weak girl because I am supposed to be saving for my new rustic oak floor, but it was so so so nice.

I Love Beach Huts

Apparently the rising price of beach huts is due to the decline in popularity of the 'package deal' abroad. Viva the English coast!

My beach hut - when I win the lottery - will have an eggshell blue door and a mint green roof, and inside will consist of a mass of vintage chintz floral prints, 40s/50s plastic kitchen items and a must have vintage sideboard, complete with patterned glass. There will always be a bottle (or two) of rose wine in the cupboard, and some Twiglets.

Sound of Silence

Wow..

That was a long silence.

I missed you. No really I did.

I thought it was about time I put pen to paper or at least my fingers to my keyboard.

So here I am, blogging from my new home, with walls that smell of new paint and noises I am not yet accustomed to. On moving day I filled a huge removal van with kitsch tat and watched as boxes of tiny deer carefully wrapped in bubbles were piled out of reach. The removal men then disappeared with all my things, and I fell asleep on the dining room floor of my empty house, as I waited and waited and waited for that completion call. Hours later - completion (scream!) - and I got the keys to my new shiny top floor apartment which I have named The Kitsch Penthouse. It was all very dramatic, and I will never forget locking my front door for the very last time.

I am in love with my new home and I will certainly be sharing some photographs with you soon. When the paint has dried.

Aside from moving I had a couple of my iPhone snaps published in the Rough Guide to Digital Photography. The book was written by the fabulous Sophie Goldsworthy, now pop over to her blog and I will see you soon.

This year has been like a roller coaster and I hate roller coasters. And after what has seemed like a lifetime of conveyancing my home is no longer mine. So, it is time to say goodbye to the 1930s house and to start a new life.. Skips into distance.

I am looking forward to decorating and sharing my new home with you. I have so many exciting plans and to put it mildly, I am beyond excited.

Lovely Things in London

On Friday I went to London with a friend to take photographs (it rained for most of the day), eat and shop. We popped into Tatty Devine, Covent Garden only to be confronted by these kitsch beauties (available in two sizes of brooch and a necklace). I love! And as you may already know I am quite partial to kitsch 70s siamese cats.

I also fell in love with this mini white Diana, complete with flash, in the Lomography shop in Soho. Too cute for words. So I will stop.

We visited the BP Portrait Award 2011 at the National Portrait Gallery. Venus as a boy by Wen Wu was hands down my favourite entry. This tiny photograph does not do the beautiful painting any justice. It is stunning and may have even inspired me to reconnect with my paint brushes. Watch this space.

A Karen Carpenter Dress

I went to The Ballroom with Clare, not to buy a 70s Karen Carpenter style dress, but to simply browse and possibly indulge in a vintage dressing up session. Remember Mr Ben? Anyway said dress fitted like a glove and was reduced to £9 from £40 so how could I possibly refuse? It would have been one of life's regrets if I hadn't, right?

Clearly it is not something I would wear while doing my weekly food shop, but I thought I may on occasion hang it from the picture rail in my bedroom and ponder over who wore it last. Unless someone would like to invite me to a 70s party?

Happy Birthday Mum!

I just called my Mum to wish her a happy birthday and to find out how she had spent her day. She said she had been to the fruit and vegetable shop in Tenbury Wells and a couple of charity shops - rock n roll - so there is life after 60. She also said she had received 32 birthday cards and loads of gifts, which blows my birthday card personal best right out of the water.

A Perfect Saturday at Vintage 2011

As promised here are some more photographs from Vintage 2011 - for you to feast your eyes on. Looking through these snaps I am rather shocked at how restrained I was, I guess the sheer volume of vintage treasures was a little too much for even the most experienced of vintage shoppers!

I still need to photograph the two items I came away with, maybe someone could remind me to do that? Along with going for a long run - with my new pink iPod shuffle - and putting out the rubbish.

I am already counting down the days - and savings the pennies - for Vintage 2012. Bring it on Wayne Hemingway! Oh and while we are on the subject of the lovely Wayne, I was thrilled to spot him in the background of one of my photographs. I guess that makes me vintage royalty?

Vintage at the Southbank Centre

Zoe and I went to Britain Loves Vintage at the Southbank Centre, London, yesterday. Zoe totally rocked in a 1960s Twiggy dress with matching tights and shoes, and I opted for a 1970s floral dress found last week in The Ballroom, Oxford.

I have so many photographs to edit which I hope to upload during the week. There were some fabulous people, sights and far too many delicious things to buy. I was very good purchasing only a vintage squeaky toy and some Queen's Coronation hairs clips.

I had my photograph taken for some fashion thingy - I wait in fear for where it might be used!

The highlight of my day was seeing my photographs on the plasma screens throughout the Southbank Centre, although I have to confess it was a little strange seeing items from my home projected throughout the venue.

A Brighton Birthday

Birthdays are usually spent in Brighton, which to me is like a giant playground for adults. The sea, the vintage shops and the bars and restaurants make for a perfect day out.

This year I met Jo, Andy and Jeff - friends from my days as an art student in Worthing. We laughed and laughed some more, and tried not to count how many years have passed since we first met.

I have to mention Andy's occasional cat on my blog. He resides in the exclusive dwellings of Brunswick Square and goes by the name of Chesterton Smythe III. (Happy now Andy?)

The vintage shops were packed full of goodies and the four Japanese pose dolls in Snoopers Paradise made my heart sing. I found a kitsch glass dome complete with butterflies in the North Laine Antique and Fleamarket. I also stumbled across my flickr friend Casper James restocking his stall. What a small world we live in.

My New Niece ~ Fifi

I travelled to Maidenhead today to meet my beautiful new niece ~ Fifi (Sofia Scarlett). Seeing my little sister walk down the stairs carrying a tiny three day old baby was quite an emotional moment and we both cried tears of joy.

Fifi's first gift from Auntie Candy Pop had to be a Cath Kidston baby grow. I am so predictable. I could have quite easily bought up the entire baby range - but I guess there is always next week.

I was utterly thrilled to see an original Candy Pop adorning the nursery wall, complimented by two Boots 1970s Wind in the Willows prints. What a classy young lady she is destined to be!

Well done little sis - I am so proud of you. xxxx

I went to London yesterday with Clare where we completely overdosed on vintage shopping, tea and cake.

We had a giggle taking these photographs and generated a fair amount of interest. A cheeky chappy eastender even asked if he could take our photograph.

There is always one.

It proved to be quite a popular spot when a bride and groom arrived for their wedding photo shoot.

My Friday Photographer is the ah-mazing Mike Stimpson, also known as Balakov.

I met Mike in Birmingham on Tuesday and I behaved like a gushy groupie. It is not everyday you get to meet a real live Lego man.

How anyone manages to bring out the vulnerable side of a Stormtrooper is beyond me. I guess even the most robotic of us has a sensitive side.

Kitsch Big Eye Prints

I have a growing collection of 1960s Dallas Simpson, D. Golding, Audrey and other kitsch prints. I rarely ever see them, so when I do I have to snap them up (while hyperventilating). They remind me of when I was young and despite their sad faces they make me smile!

I spotted this one in a shop off Carnaby Street, London. Sadly, she was not for sale so I am currently hunting for one on eBay.

Dinner with the Ambassador

This is the first time I have blogged about my job. Sorry to be boring!

On Thursday evening I had dinner with the British Ambassador to Ireland at Glencairn (his residence in Dublin). The food was fabulous and so were the surroundings. It was a real honour to be there.

I brought my menu and place card home with me, who wouldn't? And before you ask, there were no Ferrero Rocher on the menu.

My Little Pony

My sister and Peter came over last night with more pizza than should be legal for three people. Just to note; I now have a fridge full of cold pizza if anyone would like to come over.

Anyway, my sister gave me this vintage pony who came from LA and has been sitting on her colleague's desk for weeks. Thank you Rebecca for letting me have him!

The little pony inspired me to start a new set of images called Kitsch Pets. I think he looks rather dapper framed - even if I do say so myself!

Last Sunday I went out with my camera and some fellow Oxford Flickr-ers. We walked miles, but there were plenty of hot chocolate, cake and pub stops. Oxford is a great city to photograph, and it is fun to see how others view it.

Here are my results.

I was given the challenge of capturing a bike, a window and something grey. I think I just about managed it - although by grey Peter obviously meant pink.

The day ended with pie and chips at The Victoria, Walton Street and one (or two) glasses of rose.

A May Break in Devon & Cornwall

I have been back just over a week and it hardly feels like I went away. Why does life do that? I am already missing the beautiful beaches of Devon and the picturesque fishing villages of Cornwall. I must admit I was a little temped by the quaint bungalows set in the hills overlooking the south coast of Devon. Maybe, just maybe.

Plymouth's Vintage Treasures

Plymouth does pretty well when it comes to vintage, apart from the hundreds of charity shops there are some lovely and unusual vintage and antique shops.

Our first stop was an amazing clothing and accessories shop called Vintage & Retro located in the Pannier Market. It sells everything from shoes and sunglasses to jewelry boxes and prom dresses, and all at a fraction of the price one would pay in London. I tried on a number of oh so lovely things and could not resist buying a 1950's peach net skirt. My Mum bought a large piece of 1960's pink and orange psychedelic silk.

After lunch we drifted down to The Barbican where we found a number of antique shops selling anything from vintage Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who characters to the most exquisite vintage jewelry I have ever seen. I tried to take a few photographs but the lighting was poor so I am unable to show you more. You will just have to peek through the door and imagine.

Here are the things that came back to Oxford with me.

I have just returned home from a fabulous week in Devon and Cornwall with my parents. I ate too many cream teas and took too many photographs. Afternoon Tea in Thame

On Sunday Clare treated me to a wonderful afternoon tea at Cuddle My Soul in Thame, Oxfordshire. It was a real indulgence of miniature filled bread rolls, scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream, lemon drizzle cake, chocolate cupcakes and Earl Grey tea. What more could a girl ask for?

The wallpaper in the toilets brought a smile to my face!

Once again I am completely bowled over by a fashion advertising campaign. These images are from the Pull & Bear spring / summer 2011 collection. Just stunning.

I have been on planet Kate Bush all day after hearing her speak - yes I know speak - on 6 Music earlier this week. She is currently in the studio recording her new album which is unsurprisingly causing a lot of excitement. I only wish she would go on tour, although hearing The Kick Inside live - quite possibly one of the most haunting albums ever written - could prove too much for my faint heart.

Anyway, I need to get ready for an evening of sushi followed by cocktails with my friend Clare, so I will leave you with some classic and utterly eccentric Kate from 1978. Bye for now.

A year ago today I blogged for the first time and here is the post. So a whole blogging year has passed and what an amazing and weird year it has been. My life away from blogging has been (please excuse the clique) a roller coaster and my blog has served as an escapism into a world of photography, vintage and kitsch.

Thank you to everyone who has given me permission to blog their work, especially those who have let me feature them in Friday Photographer. My blog has been viewed just under 17,000 times and the three most popular posts have been N.E.E.T The Book, Doll Snaps and Chelsea Girls.

Good Friday Photographer ~ Female Trouble 3

Steven and Dawn live in a vintage kitsch paradise in Nottingham. They claim to be 'trapped somewhere between the 1950s and the 1980s.' I for one would love to be trapped with them because they live in a vintage dream world.

Female Trouble 3's photostream on Flickr was one of the very first I found when I joined Flickr in 2008. I was blown away by the collections, especially the Bambi ones. It wasn't long before I was searching on eBay to find some for myself. Steven and Dawn left Flickr for a time and I missed their world terribly, so I am really glad they are back and spreading their kitsch love!

I love the simple 1950s items in their kitchen, they remind me of my Grandma's house. The kitchen cabinet is truly wonderful.

A Sunny Weekend in April

I don't know about you but I LOVE pink blossom. Happy spring y'all!

I have taken about fifty photographs of this blossom tree, so if my Flickr stream turns into blossom-fest you have permission to leave me.

The Sue Ryder sale on Saturday was like Crufts for small dogs. If we didn't see one Pomeranian we saw ten, and as for the baby chihuahua squee! My sister came away with - no not a small handbag pet - but some chairs, which came in handy when we required a much needed pit stop (Em - do you like what I did there?) from shopping.

Later that day we drifted through Henley and onto Maidenhead for some charity shopping and sun. I can confirm my sister's back garden is a sun trap and a cat magnet. I counted five cats.

My sister bought some new brogues which needed to be snapped along with each cat. You know me. This black one was my favourite.

On such a wonderful sunny evening it would have been wrong not to eat out, so I later had dinner with my sister, her fiance, his twin sister Nina and his parents at a picturesque pub in Holyport. Laughter and tons of yummy food. Perfect. I will certainly be revisiting Holyport with my camera it was breathtakingly beautiful. Just the kind of village I would like to live in one day...

On Sunday I spent the day with Clare - chatting, eating bagels, vintage shopping and photographing her new Blythe doll. We both managed to find some vintage goodies and I tried on a pretty vintage floral dress (think Abigail's Party), which I may have to go back for.

Oh and by the way I have had my hair cut into a long bob. The verdict from my family and friends is it rocks! So go me - as they say. The only problem is I keep squeezing out far too much shampoo.

Lace Collars and the Royal Albert Hall

I have been meaning to upload these for quite sometime. I finally managed to find a couple of lace collars which I was harping on about earlier in the year. I gave in to the one from Urban Outfitters - a moment of weakness. Although in truth, I have been rather taken by their current collection. I am clearly getting younger in my old age.

The second was from Reign, a vintage clothing shop on the Cowley Road in Oxford. Reign is truly amazing and I am unable to recall a time when I have left empty handed. Danger for the wallet. I think they may need a blog post of their own one day.

I am starting to feel human again after a night in London on Friday. Stephen, myself and a couple of friends went to Roger Daltrey's Teenage Cancer Trust gig at The Royal Albert Hall. I had one or two glasses of rose too many, but all in the name of rock 'n' roll. Beady Eye were the headline act, so it was a bit like attending a mod convention. The people watching in the pub before the gig was fabulous, I only wish I had my SLR camera with me.
